Half-day guided tours of Los Haitises National Park are offered year round. After a "Welcome Aboard" rum cocktail as you're getting settled into your seat, experience an exhilarating 30 minutes boat ride from Samana Harbor. Once in the park, these highly informative tours start by slowly motoring among the park's rocky islets with their native marine-bird rookeries and interesting rock formations. Continue the tour by passing under giant mangrove trees and observing the surrounding salt-water marsh, the highly productive breeding ground for much of the bay's marine life.

    Giant caves

For many visitors, the highlight of the tour is exploring the giant caves, once home to the island's early inhabitants, the Taino Indians. While in the caves, it is not difficult for one to imagine a cooking fire here, a sleeping area there and a council assembly under the dome of one of the larger caves.

    Taino culture

Many Taino carvings adorn the rock formations and walls of these primitive dwellings and visitors are reminded to look but not molest these ancient, symbolic artifacts of Hispaniola's first civilization. The tour ends with a complimentary, fresh- fruit snack and an optional lunch at La Arena Cave's beach and return to Samana. Also offered is a return by way of Cayo Levantado with an optional lunch and several hours of swimming and relaxing before returning to port in Samana.

    Whale Tales

During the winter months of January, February and March, Whale Watching excursions are also offered. These informative expeditions of several hours' duration are led by knowledgeable guides who provide narrated, informational commentary in several languages about Samana's internationally-famous, humpback whales. These tours are conducted within approved guidelines and controlled conditions so as not to overly disturb the whales during their annual birthing and mating pilgrimage to our waters.
