As part of the national process of identifying local problems and solutions as proposed by the President of the Dominican Republic, Ing. Hipolito Mejia, Samana's new Governor, Professor Amada Manzueta has initiated a series of community meetings being held throughout the peninsula and involving community organizations, O.N.G.S., public institutions and the general public. The primary goals of these meetings are:
Community meetings conducted by Governor Manzueta have been held in the three major cities of the province: Sanchez, Las Terrenas and Samana and have allowed direct citizen participation in the identification process. In meetings within the tourism sector, problem areas were identified and decisions have been made to involve the general population, tourist industry and National Police in the reduction of crime throughout the area and improve visitor security and employment and investment in the tourist industry Effective December 4th, 2000, a loan fund will be available from the Central Government and the Banco Agricola in the amount of 1.800.000rd. This fund will used to combat the effects of a dwindling fishery resource that has already been identified as an area of major concern. Loan proceeds will also be used to improve fishing techniques employed by local fishermen. Communities within the province have already been actively involved in the rapid solution of priority problems. Committees comprised of concerned local citizenry have been of vital importance in identifying problems and assisting government personnel in their weekly evaluation of progress made in the identification and practical solution process. Further assisting and overseeing these weekly evaluations has been a monthly meeting of a Provincial Advisory Committee comprised of representatives of public institutions. In addition to its advisory function, this group oversees physical progress of daily solutions in a fair and humane way. And during the month of November, Governor Manzueta has been actively involved with problem identification and solution process and is preparing a report to be made to the people of Samana at the next meeting of the Government Advisory Committee, to be held in Samana on December 4, 2000.
