In the city of Samaná (Santa Barbara de Samaná is the official name) there are a few hotels and many "Casa de Huespedes" offering rooms at a decent prices (from 12 US$/night to 60 US$/night including breakfast). Be aware of the ITBIS tax of 16% will be added to the bill and sometimes a service tax of 10% on top of that. Better ask before hand for the particulars of your bill, to avoid surprises.

Most of the rentals are for short periods of time and they are busy during the whale watching season (from January till middle of March). see Whale Watching A survey of the accommodations in the area was done on November 2006, with rooms classified in range, from super-clean to average. We found most of the owners to be receptive to suggestions for improvements and determined to please the guests for further recommendations.

You may find some locations close to a "Car-Wash" Disco too noisy, but some people like to party till the wee hours when on vacation. Spanish is the language spoken by all the hotel operators with only a few speaking English or French. If you encounter any problem, you should address it to Politur (tourism Police) located at "Prima Rotonda" (once again, Spanish only).

Money exchange: Scotiabank has a branch in town, located close to "Primera Rotonda", next to it is a "Casa de Cambio", where the rates might be better then the bank. In November 2006, exchange was: RD$32.50 (pesos) for 1 US dollar.
